Born in 1981, saxophonist Geneviève Gauthier discovered at a early age a passion for music that would lead her to a professional musical career. After obtaining a first college diploma in classical music at Cégep de Ste-Foy during which she won the Prix d'Expression, she left the region of Quebec City to perfect her playing with Mr. Jean-Pierre Zanella.  She then obtained a second college diploma in popular music – arrangement and jazz composition – at Cégep de Saint-Laurent, in Montreal. She continues her journey at University of Montreal with Mr. Dany Roy and obtains a bachelor's degree in music – jazz interpretation (2003-2006).

 

Very active on the jazz and free jazz scene, she plays in several ensembles including, among others, the Grand Ensemble de Musique Urbaine (GEMU) (2006-) as well as the Tuxedo Swing ensemble (2008-), while collaborating with various other artists as a freelance musician. From her initial training in classical music, she has also performed many times in symphony orchestras under the direction of the conductor Jean-Pascal Hamelin as well as with the Orchestre de l'Université de Montréal.

 

She is a saxophone, flute and clarinet teacher for individuals since more than 15 years, a member of the music school team at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal (2008-) as well as an elementary school music teacher (CSPI, 2012-). She is currently completing a Masters in Arts Education at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM, 2014-).
